The Department of Religious Studies at Northwestern University is committed to teaching and researching the history, philosophy, and theology of various religious traditions found across the globe. Our exceptional faculty's wide training and varied interests provide a breadth of research possibilities for students interested in diverse facets of the study of religion. Particular areas of faculty expertise include religious ethics, socially engaged Buddhism, religion and the environment, American Catholic culture, bioethics, Rabbinic Judaism and Jewish law, Lutheran theology, sainthood and mysticism, witchcraft and magic, Buddhist literature and philosophy, Sufism in African society, and religious architecture.
