“The Spirit of Horses” Field Trip Day

December 1, 2025

Dr. Taylor and a horse

Dr. T and her Fall 2025, Religon 371 class visited Equestrian Connection in Lake Forest to learn how equine-assisted therapy supports people living with PTSD, physical and cognitive challenges, anxiety, depression, and even Alzheimer’s. Students observed powerful demonstrations in occupational and physical therapy, followed by a meet-and-greet with the horses, including Chuckles, the world’s cutest mini.

We are deeply grateful to our partners at Equestrian Connection for hosting us with such warmth and graciousness, and much gratitude to the Alumnae of Northwestern University, who generously made this field trip possible through a grant for course innovation. Thank you both!

A first-of-its-kind course nationally, “The Spirit of Horses” explores the role of horses in mythology, folklore, and sacred texts, while analyzing religious themes in media depictions of horses globally — from the prehistoric caves of Lascaux to today’s films and social platforms, while offering students hands-on experiences with real horses, as they learn about their work in therapy centers like @ectherapy. Offered every fall term, this class is one of our department’s many exciting learning adventures.
