Visiting Assistant Professor Eli Rosenblatt has been chosen to give a lecture for the The Center for Judaic and Holocaust Studies for their YSU-Kent State Emerging Scholars Lecture Series. His lecture will be given in February 2022 and is titled "Creole Israel: The Jews of Suriname (1900-1960)."

"Rosenblatt's lecture will discuss Suriname, a Caribbean country on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. Suriname is home to one of the oldest extant Jewish communities in the Western Hemisphere, having been established in the mid-1650s. Rosenblatt will discuss the history of Jews in Suriname, with particular attention paid to the ways in which major keywords in modern Jewish historiography - religion, peoplehood, family, antisemitism, nation - flowed through a decolonizing Caribbean society at the turn of the 20th century."

Congratulations to Eli Rosenblatt!
